Staying Healthy During Cold/Flu Season--Health and Wellness

Although I love Fall and Winter, I hate getting sick and not being able to breath properly. So this year I’m trying to get a healthy head start by doing a few things that might help prevent me from getting sick. 1. One of the things I try to do every other week is juice—but I don’t have a juicer. So, I just head over to my local juicing bar and buy the ‘flu buster’ or the ‘fully loaded’ juice. Even if you’re not sick with a cold or the flu, having a juice like the ‘flu buster’ will definitely help prevent you from getting sick + it tastes’ so good.
2. During the summer my sinuses were so bad. I think the heat and L.A.  smog mixed together really flared up my sinuses, so I’m always looking for natural ways to help treat the annoying symptoms. While searching google I found this tea someone had made to help with nasal congestion (and I also noticed their tea recipe was much like menudo) so I thought I’d give it a try. They mentioned that the ingredients in the tea would not only help clear your congestion but it would also help prevent you from getting sick due the tea being one big cup of vitamin C. Here is the ingredients/recipe: Add 1 cup tomato juice, 1 tsp chopped fresh garlic, ½ tsp of hot sauce, 1 tsp lemon juice, and a pinch of salt into a small sauce pan, heat the ingredients and drink hot.
 3. I absolutely love this rub! I carry it with my where ever I go, and I’m always telling people about it because it works so good. It’s a natural rub that helps to clear sinuses, relieve nasal congestion, and alleviate breathing discomfort—and since my sinuses are always acting up I always have it on hand. One of the things I love most about this rub is that it’s made with all natural ingredients. I remember once, I was about to get a migraine but I didn’t want to take another pill for it so I tried rubbing some of this under my nose to see if it would help take my migraine away and it worked. I was so excited—but keep in mind that I used it in the ‘beginning stages’ of a migraine. I’m sure it wouldn’t work if you were already in the stages of a migraine where you’re nauseous and can’t stand loud noise, or light. Here is a link of where you can purchase this rub if you’re interested, click here.

4. I love doing this. My mom also has really bad sinus issues and she too doesn’t like to take medication for it. I remember the first time I had sinus issues (only about 2 years ago), I had a sinus head ache for about a week, and it would NOT go away! So I was getting nervous about it and I told my mom how I was feeling and she mentioned that it’s just sinuses and that I could take pills like Claritin D, or just try this hot towel method and wait it out. I decided to try the towel—but I also mixed it in with regular trips to the steam room at the gym, and my Breath Better Rub. So what I did was take a bowl and fill it up with hot sink water, dip my mini-towel in it and place it over my face—covering my forehead, cheeks, and nose. I’d leave the towel on my face just until it turned cold, then I’d repeat, repeat, repeat! Even getting up a few times to get more hot water once the water in the bowl got too cool.

Lastly, I read online that using 100% eucalyptus oil in a bowl of hot water, placing your head over the bowl, and putting a towel over your head and bowl, helps with sinus congestion if you deeply breath in the steam and fumes. I’d like to give that a try next.

What remedies do you use to stay healthy? Let me know because I always like trying natural remedies!

  4. Hey...That tea recipe DOES resemble menudo! Pretty neat. I'll have to try it out. And that rub looks like something I'll be wanting to stock up on, for sure. I'm on my way over there to check it out after posting.
We have a small "mint pillow" that works well for sinuses. It's an aromatherapy pillow with natural herbs that you can freeze and heat up. It's worked well.
    Great post!

  5. I want to try juicing. I've heard good things about it. If I get stuffy I use a netti pot with a saline solution.
